"Andreas Tilliander Interview"
(English)
- please introduce yourself briefly. like where are you from / the city you live / your age / what kind of family you grow up with / music and other interest / studio environment and equipment etc...
Hello! My name is Andreas Tilliander but I also call myself Mokira, TM404, Lowfour, Rechord, Acid Lindgren, Komp, Sheet Fig, Repeatle and other names. I was born in the very south of Sweden, close to Denmark, in a small city called Hässleholm. The city was perfect when I was young. There was nothing going on there, no clubs or anything, which meant you would have to make stuff yourself instead. Most of my friends in school was into sports, but I bought a computer and a synthesizer and started making music when I was about 12 years old. When I finished school I went to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, where I still live. It was during that time, late nineties, that I also started releasing records. I’ve produced everything from pop music to experimental ambient noise.

- many years have passed since your last show in tokyo.what have you been during the time? you own project, tour around the world, daily works etc...
Yes, I think it’s almost seven years since the last time I was in Tokyo. I really miss Japan, and I’ve said it hundreds of times before, but Japan really is my favorite country. So much looking forward to get back!
For the past seven years I’ve been playing a lot (perhaps 400 shows) with a band called Familjen. It’s electronic pop music with swedish vocals, but we’ve been touring in Australia, Russia, England, Italy, Germany and so on.
I’ve also started a national radio show here in Sweden. It’s about experimental electronic music and some weeks ago we had a Tokyo special where we interviewed Sawako and Kyoka.
- at the time you came to tokyo last time as Mokira, you had already been succeeded in (so-called) Electronica music scene. what do you think the change is around you and your music since then?
Personally I think I have gone back a bit to my roots. I had a period for the past years where I really enjoyed mixing stranger electronic music with pop music, but I’m tired of that now. At the moment I enjoy introvert music a lot more. Music with thoughts and ideas rather than just plain pop.
- it seems there're so many kinds of music in Sweden. what is up to now for you especially? what kind of swedish artists or musician do you often collaborate with?
Yes, there’s really a lot of music in sweden, both techno and rock. Still, the main focus has always been on guitar music. Sweden is a country of rock, but me and my friends are doing what we can to change it!
Sweden's biggest secret Börft Records turned 25 years some months ago and they are really back in business with a couple of great vinyls.
- let me know your impression of Japan/ tokyo. music and other things.
I’ve wanted to come to Japan for as long as I can remember, but I first visited Tokyo in 2001. I think this is going to be my fifth visit to Tokyo.
Once I actually cried on my flight back, a lot. This might tell you how much I enjoy being in Japan. I once listened to Nico’s album Chelsea Girls on the Shinkansen going from Tokyo to Kyoto and still today if I hear a song from that album, I think of Japan.
I’ve been to the southern parts of Japan too, but I’ve never seen the north. This tour I’ll be playing as TM404 at this ambient onsen, so I finallly get to see that part of your country too.
The first time I came to Japan, I was 23 years old and very impressed by big cities. I think I’m a bit older now and consider smaller cities and the country side to be very interesting too.
-will you tell me your new project TM404?
TM404 started two years ago. I’ve made lots of rules for myself with this project. Everything has to be recorded using the old japanese electronic instruments from Roland. I use their 202, 303, 606, 808 and also the space echos while making those songs.
I never let myself go back and edit in a recording. It’s live and sometimes there’s mistakes, but that’s part of the charm, I think!
- what kind of performance are you planning for next shows in Japan? can we expect 404 set?
I’m playing both as TM404 and Andreas Tilliander. At the moment my main focus is TM404, so it’s a bonus that I get to play as Tilliander too. Tilliander is full on dance music but with some elements of dub. TM404 is not that dancey at all, it’s mainly for listening pleasure. And dub.
- it's very interesting to see TM404 because most of electronic music can be delivered just with light and stable MacBook Air but you bring many heavy old equips from your shelf, connect many annoying cables and run unstable bpm... what fascinates you to work on it? what do you think the possibility of non-PC electronic music? and what do you think you will do for next in this project?
I haven’t used a laptop on stange for almost ten years. I do bring a lot of hardware because I can’t enjoy myself using a laptop on stage.
It’s so much more fun and actually even more easy to play live with hardware. You have full control, but yes you do make mistakes too.
Nowadays it’s easy to sound perfect and everyone is using the same plugins and sound libraries. I try to do something else, hehe.
- any other project are you working on? next album may be?
The TM404 album was out in february 2013, so there will be some time before I record a new one. It seems as if four of my different aliases will put out records this year. That was a long time ago!
